How to Encourage Shoppers to Bring Their Own Paper Bags

Globally, there is a lot of awareness to do away with plastic carriers. Many stores and shop owners have already switched to cheap brown paper bags. But there is another angle to this; is there a way by which the shoppers always carry their own bags? How do we encourage them to do this, every time they go out to buy anything, from groceries, food items or clothes?

Here are a few ways to promote this cause:

1. Offer a straight discount on their purchase:

For every purchase, if the customer has a bag of his own, give them a discount on their bill. Getting cash back or a rebate on the bill goes a long way in getting loyal customers. The word will get around pretty fast as people speak great things about their experience and encourage people in their network to try it out too.

2. Give them a sample of their favourite chocolate:

For all customers bringing their carriers, keep a counter where they can sample or taste some good quality chocolates. They will love it, and it will also encourage them to more of the chocolates they like. It is a great win-win for the store as well as the chocolate counter as it generates a sale and creates loyal customers.

3. Charity Donation:

For every customer who gets their own bag for carrying the shopping purchases, offer them a token. While they are checking out, they will have the option to drop that token into paper bags bulk marked with noted and popular charity organisations. For every token they drop, you as a shop owner can donate a small amount – say a few cents or pence to each token. This goes a long way in establishing goodwill for the shop within the community and positions it as a socially conscious organisation.

4. Run a lottery:

All shoppers who come to the store with their own carriers get to put their names in a monthly lottery. The winner is chosen from these names by a lucky draw, and the winner gets that months’ grocery at say 50% discount. The chance of winning and getting the discount will encourage everyone to try out their luck and add the fun and excitement of shopping. Especially, when the winner is announced over the PA system in front of all the shoppers present at that time, it is a great feeling.

5. Offer a bag free for every bag purchase of a shopping bag:

Encourage shoppers to go for these reusable bags by offering a buy one get one free offer. They have to purchase one recycling shopping carrier or buy paper bags once and pay the price of a few cents to buy one, and they get another free. The next time they get it while shopping in the store; they are eligible for all the above offers.

Getting people to adapt to an environmentally friendly lifestyle is a challenging task. Navigating any change is a real challenge and using some tips like the above to help people welcome and accept the change are needed.
